Nutrition Counseling in Massachusetts

About Intensive Nutrition Counseling

Monique Kahn, MS, RD LDN
Research Driven Solutions for Living Well

Treating patients throughout Massachusetts, I am a clinical dietitian with over 15 years specializing in helping individuals by investigating the nutritional changes in their lives that can lead to improved health.

I have come to be a dietitian in an indirect path that has been fruitful in developing my approach. As an undergraduate at Brown University, considering careers in medicine or writing, I double-majored in English and Biology.

Hearing reports from new doctors of limits on patient contact time that at times impaired treatment, I veered towards biomedical research instead. In my free time while a research assistant, I found myself consistently following the findings centered on nutrition. I realized I wanted to be able to transmit the current research in nutrition to the public.

Flash forward five years: with additional degrees in nutrition from Simmons and Tufts, working as a medical writer, I pined for a missing element, individual counseling. In my next endeavor, at Walden Behavioral Care, I exclusively treated individuals with eating disorders and comorbid mental health conditions. For over a decade I have helped clients at McLean Hospital achieve their health goals.

In my hospital work and my private practice, I have continued to help those with disordered eating and eating disorders. I also specialize in helping clients to deal with a variety of inflammatory conditions and chronic diseases aggravated by intestinal dysbiosis (imbalance of the gut microbiome). I have helped many individuals with tailor-made programs to achieve optimal health goals.

The Benefits of the
Intensive Nutrition Counseling Approach

Intensive nutrition counseling is a practice of providing clients improved results through consistent meetings. Often clients cannot access this proven method due to financial constraints. For clients willing to make a commitment to working through the behavior and thought patterns surrounding food, I offer more affordable multi-meeting packages after an initial complementary phone call and an initial assessment meeting at a cost of $200.

Mindful Eating

This phrase has  become something of a catch phrase used often but not really taught in many forums. Children are natural mindful eaters. Key to regaining this skill as adults sounds deceptively simple: enjoying your food. Most people not only need to be taught but also, for many people, needs to be inculcated through practice in a comfortable setting. Find out more about my approach to practicing mindful eating during session.

Food Allergy Management

Enjoying a varied diet

I have helped many patients manage life with food allergies with comprehensive plans that are catered to each individual’s needs. Receiving a diagnosis of having one or more food allergies is a life-altering event that can leave one feeling out of control of one's environment and one's basic need for nourishment. By pointing out hidden ingredients and substitutions, I look forward to putting you in control of everyday situations. Get in touch today and see how my approach can help you, too.

Weight Change due to Mood Disorders

An Individualized Approach

For many years while working within mental health treatment settings as well as private practice, I have helped individuals with mood disorders to improve their nutritional status. An crucial part of treating such conditions is making sure the body has the nutrients it needs to produce, breakdown and regulate responses to hormones and neurotransmitters so that the body can benefit from whichever methods of treatment that they have chosen.

Unfortunately, many individuals find it difficult to adequately provide themselves with nourishing foods in beneficial amounts as a result of not feeling well. This perpetuates the cycle of malnourishment and illness. With guidance and a compassionate, patient, manageable step-wise approach, it is possible to incrementally increase the client's ability to improve quality, timing and quantity of intake.

Even small changes can make a large difference. By selecting the easiest high-impact changes in the beginning, clients enjoy early improvements that help them continue to explore changes they would like to make. I use a client-centered approach in which individual food preferences, cultural influences and client history inform our choice of treatment methods. Every individual is unique.o improve access to food and food intake.

If you believe your dietary habits leave you feeling depleted, you are missing meals, or are eating foods that do not leave you feeling well, reach out for help. Often a family member can help the most in the initial stages. I am here to help without judgment.

Services

For many years, I have helped clients struggling to nourish themselves in a comfortable way. This is an important distinction, because of all the forms of nutritional counseling, this form of interaction must be done with the utmost respect for the client's comfort. Mutual trust, respect, and compassion without judgment are all essential for progress that I rely on in my approach to treating patients.

I provide guidance to interested clients on the usefulness of an ayurvedic approach to nutrition.
