Gut Integrity: An Apple a Day Goes a Long Way

Monique Kahn, MS, RD, LDN

It's a wonder more people aren't carrying washed wrapped apples with them. But one of the best benefits comes from braising an apple. You see, if you boil a seeded chopped apple in enough water to go up 1/3 it's height, waiting til you see a sheen develop on the skin, you'll reap the benefit of a little known compound that comes out. This compound is capable of healing some of the microscopic holes that form in the lining of the intestines. This lining is only comprised of a layer that is one-cell thick. So it's pretty easy to cause a hole, especially if there are problems with digestion further upstream that allow larger undigested foods to pass through undigested. These holes in the lining can cause what is known as "leaky gut," when they form regularly, leading to a host of problems.
